Short Biography including research and teaching interests
Marga van Mechelen (dr. b. 1953) has published widely on conceptual, performance and installation art since the late seventies and on issues concerning historiography and visual theory in general and visual semiotics and psycho-semiotics in particular, such as the Kristevean concepts of the signifying process and the semiotic, empathy (Einfühlung) and abjection. Her dissertation, Form and signifying process, is concerned with a comparison between the way art history, Greimasian semiotics and Kristevean psycho-semiotics are dealing with the form/content relation. She publishes regularly on the above-mentioned subjects in international semiotic periodicals. In 2006 she published the long expected book about the legendary history of De Appel (De Appel. Performances, Installations, Video, Projects, 1975-1983. Amsterdam: De Appel Foundation 2006). She was the co-editor (with Göran Sonesson) of an issue on performance art of Visio, International Journal for Visual Semiotics (2000). She is member of the International Board of Visio and of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Semiotic Studies.
She teaches on theoretical issues and debates that are relevant for the contemporary art practice and put them in an(art)historical or philosophical perspective. In former years she taught courses on the history and historiography of Modern Art (Modern Art revisited) and the interdisciplinary courses Abjection and Transgression in which art practices (visual, theatrical, literary and cinematographic practices) were discussed in relation to the theoretical concepts of Freud, Bataille and Kristeva and Dutch art, culture and politics of the sixties and seventies.

Marga van Mechelen (geb. 198543) heeft sinds de eind jaren zeventig veelvuldig gepubliceerd over conceptuele, performance en installatie kunst en over onderwerpen die betrekking hadden op de geschiedenis van de discipline kunstgeschiedenis en visuele theorie in het algemeen en visuele semiotiek en psychosemiotiek in het bijzonder. Onder meer over de begrippen van Julia Kristeva ‘signifiance’, ‘le sémiotique’, ‘Einfühlung’ en ‘abjection’. In haar dissertatie, Vorm en betekening vergelijkt zij de wijze waarop in de kunstgeschiedenis, de Greimasiaanse semiotiek en de psychosemiotiek van Kristeva de vorm/inhoud relatie wordt gedacht. Zij publiceert geregeld over de bovengenoemde onderwerpen in internationale semiotische tijdschriften en andere organen. Recentelijk verscheen het lang verwachte book over de vermaarde geschiedenis van De Appel ( De Appel. Performances, Installaties, Video en Projecten 1975-1983, Amsterdam: De Appel 2006). Eerder verscheen onder redactie van haar en Göran Sonesson een themanummer over performance kunst van Visio, International Journal for Visual Semiotics ( 2000). Zij is lid van de internationale redactieraad van Visio en van het uitvoerend comité van de Internationale Associatie voor Semiotische Studies.
Ze doceert bij voorkeur over theoretische zaken en discussies die voor de huidige kunstpraktijk van belang zijn, die ze daarbij in een (kunst)historisch of filosofisch perspectief plaatst.
De afgelopen jaren doceerde zij over de geschiedenis en de geschiedschrijving van de Moderne Kunst (Moderne Kunst opnieuw bekeken) en was zij docent en coördinator van de interdisciplinaire module Abjectie en Transgressie waarin kunstpraktijken (visuele, theater, literaire en film praktijken) besproken werden in relatie tot theoretische concepten van Freud, Bataille en Kristeva.
